4-H’ers form friendships across United States

Lauryn Kugler has a lot of friends. Many of them are fellow 4-H’ers she meets when taking her rabbits, goats or llama to competitions. “I wouldn’t have met any of them if it wasn’t for 4-H,” she said. “I know 4-H members in a lot of places and we keep in touch.”

“You need a (4-H) program that is contemporary, meaning tuned in to what’s the current culture of youth. But you also need to keep focused on what got us to where we are today."

“4-H does a really good job of giving you a taste of a lot of different areas. And you can start when you’re only 8 years old. FFA tends to bring your focus up to the next level of leadership development."

Growing up in 4-H, Katie Clarke knew livestock. She was involved in both livestock judging and quiz bowl. That interest eventually led her to become Minnesota’s 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology liaison. According to Clarke, “4-H is in my blood.”

Earning a State Fair trip is quite an accomplishment for any 4-H’er, but this year’s trips meant a little something extra to a number of 4-H’ers. A quartet of Houston County 4-H’ers in the beef barn annex reflected on what they and their area has endured since the mid-August rain deluge that dropped up to 17 inches in bluff country.

Write an essay, get a horse

How would you like to get a horse for free? That was the question posed by the Le Sueur County Fair to area youth. A month before the Le Sueur County Fair began this summer, an anonymous donor gave a yearling painted horse to the fair to be given to someone in the county. According to Fair Board President Wayne Fahning, they decided to have a youth contest to give the horse away. Fahning said the idea came from a major national horse show that gives a horse away every year.
