Ace of Spades: Mosquito repellent, now static-free and springy fresh

Originally published in the June 13, 2008, print edition.

What can I use to keep mosquitoes away?

Thanks to Steve and Carol from Alexandria for this idea: Place a fresh clothes dryer sheet under the collar of your shirt or blouse. This can also be rubbed on your ankles for protection.

What is causing all of the mushrooms on the lawn?

With the extra rain, this is caused by a rotted stick or a piece of old wood under the soil. Once the rainy season stops, the mushroom problem will be gone.

Our lawn is full of “creeping charlie.” How can I get rid of this problem weed?

Trimec is one product which works well. Check the label for proper application. The old borax does not work in most cases.

We had a lot of hail recently, with many of the plants being shredded. Will the plants come back?

Most of the perennial plants should leaf out again, though the damaged leaves will set the plants back. Most annuals, like the tomatoes in the garden, will need to be replanted. Even though there was leaf loss from maple trees and others, these should leaf out next season.

Can I plant asparagus seeds in our area, and expect to see them grow and produce?

Yes, actually using the seeds is easier than planting started plants. This asparagus will be ready for consumption in the third season; use sparingly the second year. My wife, Donna, has planted the seeds successfully in the past.

I planted tomato plants recently. Do they need to be covered at this late time?

No. The frost season should be past now, but follow my ideas in having a successful crop. You can find these tips at www.thelandonline.com/l_ace/local_story_087121509.html. If you don’t have web access e-mail me at hwdw@madtelco.net or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to 601 1st St. SW, Madelia, MN 56062.

Now, I need some help from you. Has anybody successfully planted potatoes inside a used rubber tire? Please let me know. We appreciate hearing from you, on this and other questions as well.
